broken bottles fall on black sandy beaches

This morning I started including a swim in my morning run/walks, looping down to Kehana Beach. It's often a bit scary to look at--short, short beach break and high swells coming in behind. This morning it was the calmest I've seen it, so I decided to take the plunge. It is lovely to float in those swells, the biggest I've been in.

You make me feel succulent.

The neighbors succulent row. I didn't know that many types of succulent existed. Isn't it fun to say 'succulent'? Succulent, succulent, succulent...

Rainbows have nothing to hide

On my morning run/walk, I came across this rainbow arcing up over the Kalapana road. It was amazingly close...the color bands were actually in front of the trees about a hundred yards in front of me, and it was like looking at the leaves through a filter.

The end (beginning) of the rainbow, on the left, ended in the trees above Kehana beach. I went down to the beach, looking for a pot of gold. There was none.

Off To Paradise

Aloha!
Due to popular demand --plus a healthy (?) dose of paranoia about posting our kids' pictures on Facebook-- we're starting a blog of our Hawaiian adventure.  This blog is a place where our family and friends can check in on us and see photos, video and our commentary on what we are doing and seeing here in Paradise.

For those of you who don't know, in January Jason began a six-month sabbatical and we decided to spend the time in Hawaii because it has warm beaches and a lot of people who look like Jason. We chose to go to the Big Island, as our research indicated that it is the least touristy and most family-friendly.  We decided that we'd stay in a few different places (homes and towns) so that in the event that we didn't like one, we wouldn't feel stuck.  In fact, we only booked for the first three months. So it's very possible that we'll be sleeping on a beach come May!

One awesome thing is that our airplane tickets, all four of them, were bought with frequent flyer points! And to make it even more amazing, we managed to squeeze in a stopover in San Francisco, one of our favourite places in the world where some of our favourite people live.

We had a terrific time in San Francisco. We stayed with our cool, generous friends Carl and Susannah and their 9-year-old twins.  The weather was beautiful --uncannily so, as there has been no rain in the city for months. Susannah, Antje and I took a vigorous walk up Twin Peaks (and then Susannah and I did it again --Fitbit says we did 70 flights of stairs!). We took the kids to the zoo, and the Exploratorium.  Susannah and Carl opened their house up on to lots of visitors, so we got to see almost everyone. Zachariah concluded, "That was the best five days of my life!"

Wow, posting video takes forever! I gotta figure out a different way to do this, or I will never post!
