The Local

https://vimeo.com/91393604

We've started going to Isaac Hales Beach Park, which is about fifteen minutes away from our place going east along the Kalapana-Kapoho coast road.

We love the vibe there. It's a local free-for-all, with tons of people coming down in the late afternoons during the week and all day on the weekends, spreading out across the parking lot in big family clumps, talking, yelling, BBQing, and fishing off the breakwater.

Volcano-heated hot springs (in the clump of trees to in the right of the image below) leak into the edge of the pool created by the boat ramp, creating a mixture of cool sea-water and hot fresh water.  The current and wave action constantly changes the temperature gradient in different spots.

If you go around the breakwater into the little cove, you'll find great waves. Boarders and surfers are bobbing about out there, talking to each other and occasionally catching waves. The whole scene is like going to a local park at home on a hot, sunny day, except with water sports instead of Frisbee and soccer and basketball.
